Good to see someone from my time, Apr 65-Jul 66, and Dog Trick, Bill Marqus. I was a 203 in the Quonset hut on hill one and then hill 2. Bill, were you there the night of the fire alarm? We were all outside in the snow wearing machi boots and a blanket. We later found out that someone, Tiny Marqueson(?), had tried to have a marshmallow roast in a trash can in the latrine. I wish I would remember the name of my roommate. We all called him Van. There is a NSFW story about Van that I have been telling for years since leaving Wakkanai. Van threatened me with death if I ever told the story. Still some of my favorite memories. Good people, good times, and great chow hall after arrival of MSgt Major. I spent most of my time (and money) in town at the Bear Bar. It was a lot cheaper than going across the street. Sawa-San and his wife Tamiko were good friends I miss them. After being at Wakkanai, I bet no one ever complains about snow. I'm now living in Whitakers NC and enjoying retirement without snow. Merry Christmas and warm memories to all.

Once again it's time to wish all the Wakkanai alumni a merry Christmas and a great New Year. My Christmas in Wakkanai was 60 years ago. How is that possible?

I was at Wakkanai 3/62-2/63 "D" flt 29252. I drove the half track between shifts. There during Cuban Crisis. Had USO tour Johnny Cash. I never saw the show, but got to guard his plane 15 miles from base with no phone & 5 rounds of ammo.

Yes, Susan Holloway, I went to Hof right after Leaving Wakkanai, and from Hof We went to Eielson, Alaska.
I am sure glad to see this group back on line. I havent been on it as often as I should, but still like to check in once in a while.
Who pays to keep this up, and do you need contributions?
What address do we sent them to?

I was stationed at Wakkanai from June 1968 to September 1969, after which I was assigned to Malmstrom AFB, Montana. Less snow, but much colder.
I was out of the military for a while, but reentered, retiring in 2003 with 30 years total.
I was saddened on hearing that MSgt (Ret) Larry Nilles has passed away. Larry was a good friend to me, I baby sat for his first child while there. He was a bit of a wild man, that his first wife, Yvonne, was working to tame.
I did get in touch with Walt Kannavel, a double linguist, Spanish and Russian, who'd retired and was working for Mazda as an area representative.
Good to sece folks remembering their times at Wakkanai.
